We just finished our auditiones for Concertmaster for our quality community orchestra I run here in St. Louis.
Our Maestro is a professor of Conducting at Mizzou and chose the pieces for the audition.
He's a conservatory graduate and has been around the block a few times.
Among those required were the solos from Scheherazade and the Adagio opening from Mozart's 39th Symphony. He explained that the major orchestras he has played in used the Mozart a lot as it separates those who can accurately count from those who can not. "If you don't subdivide in your head you're already in trouble." The opening looks easy, but it's not. He was right." Hope this helps.
