I see that there is the principal trumpet opening with the Metropolitan Opera. Is Mel Broiles, the current principal trpt retiring? Thought he would be there as long as Herseth was with Chicago.

I heard that Balazs Nemes who is the current finalist in chicago and also the winner of the MET job last year and who left after 2 weeks played such a strong final audition. it was only later that they found out he had played the audition on a rotary trumpet when the Met uses C trumpets. I guess that is why he left and there is still an opening?

Not necessarily true. He WAS with the Met for two weeks before he left so if it was a requirement to play C trumpets, i would think he would have, unless of course, he preferred the rotary and their was a difference of opinion. Not saying this is a reason why he left but perhaps might have contributed to it.

Mel Broiles passed away in August of 2003. About a year or two prior to his death, he had retired from the MET orchestra, and David Krauss won the audition to fill his post.

The MET orchestra employs two principals of each section to make their schedule manageable.
Balasz Nemes was the winner of the audition to fill the post vacated by Mark Gould, the other principal trumpeter of the MET orchestra. This audition took place last April.

I don't personally know anything about why Mr. Nemes left, but it is his spot that's open. Incidentally, James Pandolfi retired after last season, so the 3rd trumpet spot at the MET will presumably be auditioned sometime in the future.

I had no idea he passed away. I guess sometimes we forget that NY has another great trumpet section other than the NY Philharmonic.
