One of my bass friends has always complained about all the rubato taken in the bass viol section solo in the last movement of Beethoven 9th.

He loved this performance!

4th movement starts at 1 hour

Osmo has always done the finale that way with us. It's unorthodox, yes, but technically it's to the letter of what Beethoven wrote. There's no tempo change where the cellos and basses begin - it's still Presto - and the first mention of any recitative in the movement is a page and half later, when the first singer makes his entrance.

I'll admit, I was skeptical at first, but I've grown to enjoy hearing it Osmo's way. The Proms crowd certainly seemed to like it last night - there were six curtain calls!

You can hear the 3rd and 4th movements of Beethoven 9 again until at least October 1.

Ludwig van Beethoven
Two movements from Symphony No. 9 in D Minor, Op. 125 (Choral)
The Minnesota Orchestra, BBC Symphony Chorus, and soloists, Osmo Vanska, conductor
The BBC Proms, London, England

It is at the end of the hour.
