Is there any way orchestras (and educational institutions, etc.) could be encouraged to list their current conductor job searches on myauditions? Occasionally one will appear but it seems to be inconsistent.

Currently, the only way I am aware of to be reliably informed of jobs that are available is the job bulletin board of a certain organization. This organization charges $100 per year for the privilege of accessing this information, which should be easliy available to the public somewhere.

Any thoughts?

ASOL - $100 a year (arts admin jobs including the conductor positions).

International Musician - $39 a year for non-members(orchestra jobs).

College Music Society - $60 a year (education jobs).

Total - $199

Myauditions performance, arts admin and education jobs - FREE.

Priceless!

Exactly, Forrester. In fact, since orchestral musicians are now actively persuing and even winning conducting jobs (James Sommerville, etc.) it would be to the advantage of the orchestras themselves to advertise here where everyone could see it for nothing.

Please encourage your respective orchestras to copy the adveritsement that is sent to the ASOL and send it to Myauditions.

As an alternative, someone with access could provide the information for Myauditions to post. I wouldn't think this is stealing, since the information is supposed to be public anyway.

I've been a member of Myauditions for several years now and even had a conversation with one of their staff members not to long ago.

They do, in fact, post jobs from their end and with each posting, an email is sent to the organization letting them know that the job has been posted. Whenever I see a job on another Web site that Myauditions does not have listed, I send an email and usually within a day or two it appears.

I have also heard rumors lately that sometime soon Myauditions may start a subscrition program to charge a fee to access job postings. They've been running this service for free for several years so I think they are looking to obtain a return on their investment with so many now using their services.

Don't know if this is true or not but if it is, I am sure it will be a lot less than the combined $199 a year for the other websites. We will have to wait and see.

In the meantime, I guess if you see a job somewhere else, either let Myauditions know or tell the company about Myauditions.

I'm a board member of the Conductors Guild. Our annual membership is $100; $50 for students. Membership gives you many many benefits, including access to our job listings. I don't know what you mean by "privilege of accessing information." We are a non-profit arts service organization, the only such organization in the world serving ALL conductors: orchestra, band, chorus, opera, ballet, etc. If you're at all serious about getting a gig as a conductor, you should seriously think about joining. Check with your tax advisor: you may find that membership dues are tax-deductible.

Myaditions.com is a for-profit, commercial company, not at all analogous to an organization like the Conductors Guild.

Other than knowing what jobs are open, what does the Conductor's Guild do? I know you have an annual conference, but what else? A generation ago, Max Rudolf used to write articles for your journal. Do you even have a journal any more?

My point is that it serves not only the applicants to have the information available free, it serves the organizations as well. If the conductor's guild wanted to best serve the profession, they would give that information away. If the organization had other benefits to membership besides that, people would still join.

Of course, some orchestras don't advertise their openings at all. That is their privilege. I just wonder where and through whom they are 'discovering' their staff conductors.

Whether for profit or not, the goal should be to get the most information for the best value.

BTW -- TS9, it's so very nice to have you back. You have been away a very long time.

Mac, I've been lurking in the background. But, thanks.

The Conductors Guild produces several publications, sponsors an annual conference each January, sponsors several conducting workshops per year, has a mentoring program for young conductors, etc. Please visit www.conductorsguild.org. (Sorry, Mac, I can't get you a discount!)

I mentioned the "for profit" versus "non profit" issue only to illustrate that the Conductors Guild relies on membership dues to run the organization, just like so many other non-profits (arts and non-arts.)

There's no question that our goal is to get the most and best information to our members and we feel that we offer real value.

Is the Conductors Guild also useful when you live in Europe. Are they also informing members about workshops/masterclasses in Europe?
Are there already members from Europe?
