This may be old news, but because (a) I'd like to write something that isn't controversial and (b) no one has said anything yet . . .

Please note that the Los Angeles Philharmonic has announced on their website that they are accepting applications for upcoming auditions for Principal Flute and Principal Bassoon.

Greetings,

Just a friendly reminder that we do not permit links to auditions outside of MyAuditions. You may certainly discuss and promote it but please refrain from posting a link on the forums.

Auditions are posted regularly on MyAuditions via our Vacancies section located on the left navigation menu accessible from the main page.

Duly noted. My bad.

And just for the record, I have no direct or indirect connections to the LA Phil other than attending their concerts.

I'm sort of confused after looking at the website. Is the principal flute or assistant principal flute seat vacant right now? are they having the other open seat audition in the near future?

I think it's Principal Flute up for grabs. I'm not sure when the other one is scheduled, if it is. I just work here!

hmmm.... interesting, the bassoon job was posted in other places, so I knew before, but it's funny that it shows up on their website AFTER the resume deadline, isn't it??

LAPhil tunes to A=442?!? Isn't this quite unusual in the US?

Despite the fact the most (if not all?) conservatories in the country tune to 440, a number of the bigger orchestras tune to 442. These include: Los Angeles Philharmonic, New York Phil, Chicago Symphony, St. Louis Symphony, and Houston Symphony.

San Francisco and Boston tune to 441, as far as I know.

I'd also like to add that despite the fact that university and conservatory orchestras tune at 440, that is rarely where the pitch really ends up. I've been in rehearsals where within five minutes I've had to readjust my flute to play higher. Pitch is constantly on the rise in my experience.

FWIW: I have no idea when this info was actually first posted to their website. I posted it here on this forum when I did only because
a) that's when I saw it
b) no one else had mentioned it, and
c) I thought others may be interested (just trying to do my part Smile ).

So, the bassoon info could have theoretically been posted on their website before the resume deadline -- but I don't know for sure either way.

Just FYI, Boston does not tune to 444. I can confidently tell you that they tune to 441. In the past, they tuned to 442.

Being a big fan of playing 440, I had to reply to this topic. I played in the LA Phil, briefly, and must say that if you enjoy playing low, this is not the orchestra for you. Every orchestras pitch will rise, even Philadelphia, where the players are VERY aware of 440. I have never had a harder time trying to play a single chord in tune with others until I played in LA, but that was just my experience. When you start at 442 you can go only go up from there, which was torturous for me, having spent my life learning to play 440. Just my 2 cents

The auditions are ongoing. I think finals are this weekend (but I'm not at all sure).

I don't think this is confidential, so I'll pass it on: in response to previous criticism at MyAuditions [snicker] we moved 10 (ten!) candidates to a final round with screens. From that round five candidates were moved on to a final-final round, and from that two bassoonists are still standing and are offered trial weeks: Bill Buchman of the Chicago Symphony and Sue Heineman of the National Symphony. But keep those knives sharpened; we haven't precluded the possibility of invited candidates, which of course would make meaningless the auditions played this week. .............. just joshin', y'all, just joshin'....

Thanks, David. Good luck to them both. Can you say when the trial weeks will happen? If you can't say specifically, will they happen before the beginning of the summer Bowl season?

Thank you very much for this information. Just curious: how many bassoonists actually showed up? And did everybody have to play all rounds, or were some people who already have decent gigs (such as the two finalfinalfinalists) invited to later rounds?

Dunno when those trial weeks will be. I presume they will be in the fall. It's not always easy to set up those weeks; it has to be the intersection of when the MD is here and when the candidate can get time away from their gig.

As per our usual practice, some candidates started in the semifinal round.
