Ah, must've mixed up the dates. Rookie mistake.

Matt Strauss and Ed Stephan were offered trial weeks as of yesterday's final. Congrats to them both.

Ooooh, and to add more juice (lol), Ed just won the Dallas Symphony timpani audition. Keep your eyes peeled to see if they will be having another audition! Smile

I believe Dallas designated Feza Zweifel as runner up. If so, they would most likely offer the job to him without another audition.

If one were to believe the word around these parts (TX), it was Brian Jones who was declared the official runner-up in Dallas.

I stand corrected.

So this audition was a bit unique in at least one respect: the amount of sight reading requested.

In every round, at least 3 of the excerpts were not on the list. I can't speak to how "standard" the non-list excerpts were; maybe someone can provide more information.

Any thoughts?

I was there for prelims and semis. It was 3 excerpts of sight reading in each round. On my days it was Beethoven Piano Cto #3, the ending of Mahler 1, Mvt 1, and the end of Magic Flute overture (prelims) then 2 spots in Mendelssohn Scottish (Scherzo) and... I'm drawing a blank on the 3rd one. Both rounds seemed to be of similar duration. It was unusual, for sure. Not sure what the goal was. Also surprising was the requirement of specific tempi, provided only moments before the start of the rounds.

Another interesting point to make here, relative to this thread's earlier debate, is that the two remaining candidates played this audition on drums that are considerably different from what either usually performs on.

Also in the prelims Beethoven Piano Concerto 5 was asked as sight reading, as well as Mozart 41.

I'b be curious to see what happens in the event of Mr. Stephan winning this audition. Since I would assume he's already been offered, and accepted, the position and likely signed a contract to play 2010-2011 in Dallas, wouldn't that usually mean that the vacancy created by his leaving would technically be a new one, requiring another audition? Or is there a longer statute of limitation on audition results?

In response to "Drum702" I'm guessing that would be addressed in their ( DSO's ) CBA.

It's been almost a month since finals for this job...does anyone know when their trial weeks are to take place?

I see now that the position starts in September 2011, so I would assume the trials will occur sometime in this season.

The job was offered to Ed Stephan. Don't know if he accepted.
