My understanding from two reliable sources is that a winner was in fact chosen and an announcement will be forthcoming. Remember that many of the people who audition for these positions often do so without the knowledge of their current employer and often do not want their names splashed about simply to satisfy the curiosity of the general public. No need to fan the flames prematurely.

Haha. Hey, at least I confirmed that they picked someone. Given that it's St. Louis and it's a horn audition, presuming there was a winner in the first place is dangerous.

I'm willing to bet if you asked a horn player in your local ICSOM orchestra, they could probably give you an answer. Out of respect to the winner I'm not going to blow his/her cover here. If someone else wants to, go right ahead, I guess.

Also, can an audition technically have a "winner" if the person who was offered the position wasn't at the audition in question?

What do you mean "not at the audition"?

Quite literally that. I was informed by more than one person in attendance that the person to whom the position was ultimately offered did not actually attend the audition. If this is the case, I assume that the SLSO's CBA allows for alternate means of evaluating candidates.

As a member of the St. Louis Symphony, I can assure you that there were no nefarious doings at the principal horn audition. The winner was absolutely there and played beautifully, I'm told. Please refrain from spreading untrue rumors..it's unfair to those orchestras that do play by the rules.

Thanks for sharing that. And please know that I was hardly questioning the qualifications of the individual in question. Nothing could be further from the truth.
