Speaking of auditions: Does anyone know what is going on with the NY Phil 2nd flute job? I noticed Amanda Sparfield subbed in last year and this year I think it was Karen McKofrey (sp?). And still no one has said anything about the Baton Rouge Sypmhony Job. Thanks all Smile

The finals of the NY Phil 2nd flute audition are on October 4th. And I'm not 100% sure of this, but I think Rose Lombardo may have won the SD audition yesterday.

Thank you Rgflute for responding to me, much appreciated? Do you know why the audition was canceled?

The Principal Flute position in San Diego has been won by Rose Lombardo, currently studying at Colburn, I think.

@ ClintF - Did you hear anything if there was a 2nd flutist picked out by the NY Phil today?

My understanding is that there was no hire.

Wow that's kind of hard to believe! Guess this means that's the LA Phil and NY Phil are 2nd fluteless? Any clue what they're going to do about it?

Why can't we just settle these things the old-fashioned way --- by seeing who can have the best sex with the conductor? This is ridiculous.

Or will they have people come in for trials? I'm honestly surprised they had so many good flutists filling the 2nd chair as substitutes, I'm shocked none of them won the audition!

I remember some interesting discussions on here in the past where it was mentioned that often subs aren't automatic shoe-ins for the job, & sometimes it's better to be an unknown candidate during the audition process. Yet other times, a regular sub may not have even gotten past a semi-final or final round (I've seen this myself at a few auditions). It's anyone's guess really, but perhaps it was 1 of these factors.

BBodden - haha, perhaps they should add that to the job description?

But if a sub did win a position, would they really need the probationary period? The principal of the section would know their playing well enough to know if they want them their as part of the flute team? It will be interesting to see who wins the job. My guess is a recently graduated student.

Is there a reason then that Martha Aarons is listed as acting principal flute on their site? Did she win the audition, or is she on trial?

I think Martha is acting Principal Flute until Rose begins. The audition material said that the position starts in Jan 2012, so I think that might explain it?
